Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay) To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Hospitalists must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine and maintain professional competency as indicated in their delineation of privileges. All Hospitalists must maintain current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certifications. Physical Requirements: The incumbent Hospitalist should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 4 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position. ["This position is located at the Stratton VA Medical Center, Albany, New York . The Hospitalist is expected to maintain good clinical, professional, and personal judgment at all times. The Hospitalist participates in quality management and other activities as directed. The Hospitalist rounds on the medical ward. The Hospitalist performs health assessments (for medical issues) for patients admitted to the inpatient Psychiatry Service as needed. The Hospitalist provides medical consultation services for psychiatric in-patients with acute or subacute medical care needs. The Hospitalist is expected to evaluate, supervise house staff, and manage clinical issues and changes, as needed, on their patients. The Hospitalist consults with the appropriate Specialty services when more specialized evaluation or intervention may be required. The Hospitalist is charged with delivering the best possible care to our veteran patients. This care must be delivered in accordance with hospital policy and meet community standards. The Hospitalist works within her or his hospital medical privileges at all times. The Hospitalist is expected to maintain current knowledge and skills. She or he must be responsible for a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic activities. She or he is expected to maintain good clinical, professional, and personal judgment at all times. The Hospitalist exercises corporate citizenship by serving as leader and/or active member on Medical Center administrative committees as requested or required. The Hospitalist participates as needed in Process and Quality Improvement projects and programs within the Medical Center. Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) is necessary in all areas in accordance with facility policy. All administrative work must be completed in a timely fashion. x All VA administrative, clinical and quality requirements must be met on a timely basis. The Hospitalist provides admitting histories, physical examinations, orders, daily progress notes, discharge or transfer summaries, and communications to consulting providers. The Hospitalist assesses patients, order and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies, initiates consults and referrals, and supplies in accordance with VA policy, VA formulary and State regulations. The Hospitalist works with other staff members to be part of a team that provides a consistent interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to patient care, education, and communication. The Hospitalist helps foster a single, uniformly high level of patient and staff satisfaction. The Hospitalist formulates and initiates health care teaching for hospitalized patients and their families. The Hospitalist should have familiarity with or willingness to learn standard inpatient procedures such as central lines, paracentesis, thoracentesis and lumbar puncture.
