The Advanced Practitioner Registered Nurse Occupational Health (from here referred to as the "APRN") is responsible for performing various clinical functions in the office of Employee Occupational Health (EOH), supporting various programs within the facility including Safety (Environmental Exposure), Infectious Disease, and DEMPS. They will also be required to be proficient in Occupational Health Record System (OHRS). Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master'sdegree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. Physical Requirements: It is VA policy to ensure that all selected applicants and employed personnel are physically, mentally and emotionally fit to perform the duties of the position to which assigned. A pre-placement physical examination is required for all fulltime, part-time and intermittent employees identified by VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The pre-placement physical examination shall be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness for candidates for appointment in VA. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. This position requires that you are able to lift at least 50 lbs. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on organizational needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual Influenza vaccination, TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. Will also work with Patient Safety Officer to prevent recurrence of Occupational injuries. Diagnosing and treating potential infectious diseases to support the hospital wide infection control program Performing Driver clearances for hospital employees and veterans in accordance with hospital policies and procedures Performing indicated medical surveillance examinations in accordance with OSHA requirements and hospital and VHA policies and procedures Providing first aid or interventions designed to allow employees to remain at work, as appropriate, for non-work related illnesses and injuries Working with other services (i.e. Safety, Human Resources, Infection Control, and Quality Management) to identify employees at highest risk for injury or illness, and identifying strategies to help lessen the risk within these groups. Providing Agent Orange and /or ionizing radiation assessments for the Environmental Exposure Registry, as needed Manages all medical clearance requirements including FIT testing, fitness for duty, DEMPS and EMRT teams. The APRN participates in the management of patients/employees with acute and chronic diseases or other health problems, as well as preventive health where appropriate. The APRN provides health teaching to increase the employees' understanding of disease processes, self-care and treatment plan. The APRN will work with the Employee assistance program (EAP), as needed, to develop and maintain a health education program for employees. The APRN is guided by the hospital policies, procedures, standards of superior occupational health care, federal laws and regulations, clinical privileges, professional literature, and medical reference material. Manages all Employee Immunization Programs including Influenza and Covid-19. The APRN is expected to participate in hospital wide committees representing Occupational/Employee Health while facilitating process improvement at a systems level and problem-solving strategies with other disciplines. The APRN is expected to be an active member or consultant of the following committee(s) when assigned (Accident Review Board, Safety, Infection Control, Seasonal Flu, Nurse Professional Standards Board, Safe Patient Handling, Construction, Safe Water Handling and Wellness) The APRN is expected to maintain knowledge of current techniques, trends and professional issues through participation in ongoing learning; including participation in ongoing continuing education, both VA-mandated and specialty specific. The APRN demonstrates courtesy, respect and a positive attitude toward all stakeholders. The APRN has the knowledge and skill to assist customers with questions or concerns. The APRN understands the importance of and participates in service recovery. The APRN recognizes the need and modifies care as necessitated by the patient/employee's age and abilities. The APRN assesses for gender identity and expression, socio-cultural and religious concerns of the patient/employee and provides plans of care sensitive to those elements. The APRN must have knowledge of applications contained in the VHA Computerized Patient Records System and the Occupational Health Recording System, using those applications to manage patient/employee care and documents within the system in compliance with current practices and processes. The APRN must be compliant with maintaining patient/employee confidentiality per HIPAA regulations relative to both written and verbal patient information.
